Chlöe Swarbrick has yet again insisted on using of the phrase "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" when protesting Israel.
This follows the now Green co-leader leading the chant at a pro-Palestine rally in Auckland last year. The phrase has sparked significant backlash, particularly from New Zealand's Jewish community. Critics argue that the slogan, historically linked to calls for the eradication of Israel, is deeply offensive through historic association with calls for a second holocaust.
Swarbrick defended herself by claiming she had consulted with her Jewish friends and supporters before using the chant. In any other circumstance, of course, it is likely that Swarbrick would be rightly scornful of this justification. It’s like Winston Peters saying that it was okay to make a public joke about how “two wongs don't make a white" because he first heard it from a Chinese guy.
