The one thing missing from Simon Wilson's column.
Advice on combating abuse was worthwhile but incomplete.
In his Herald column this morning, Simon Wilson gets into the subject of our coarsened discourse, looking particularly the relentless abuse faced by women in politics. He details the grim reality of the situation and finishes up offering some practical advice for a more civil and humane political environment. This includes refraining from gendered criticism, avoiding dehumanising language and resisting the urge to trivialise or normalise violence and harm.
All these suggestions are commendable. Missing, however, is the crucial matter of personal integrity. More specifically, the need to apply these standards unequivocally and pointedly within one's own political circles.
